Posse In Effect!

Since the very beginning of hip hop, the Posse Cut has been a tried and true staple of the genre.  Theres just somethin about MC’s from different groups and crews coming together to murder a track that makes for classic material. 

It’s such a staple, in fact, that it has almost become a cliche and watered down, but what hasn’t in hip hop nowadays? but I digress… Despite how it is today, Over the years there have been some classic records that have made history, started and squashed beefs, sparked trends, bobbed heads and made peaople say “dddaaaammnnn!”… Here are some of the greatest Posse Cuts of all time.. 

1. Heavy D. ft. Kool G Rap, Grand Puba. CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, Q-Tip – Don’t Curse

Aside from being a dope Posse Cut, its got a cool concept, and props must be given to Heavy D for getting Kool G Rap to spit a verse without cussin’… And this is the guy who spit some of the nastiest rhymes ever in “Talk Like Sex”

2. A Tribe Called Quest ft. Leaders of the New School (aka Busta Rhymes and some no-names)- Scenario

Tribe.  Busta.  Powerful Impact BOOM!! From the Cannon!

3.  Chubb Rock, OC< and Jeru The Damaja – Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers ‘95

Minimum number of MC’s on a Posse Cut is 3 in my opinion…and these three are some of the best to hail from the Boro of Brooklyn.  Backed by a beat from THE best to ever do it, DJ Premier

4. Fat Joe ft. Nas, Jadakiss, Big Pun, Raekwon – John Blaze

So far on the list we moved from late 80’s legends to early to mid 90s classics, here we move into the mid-late 90s era.  Each of these MC’s were in their prime on this one, spittin that hot fuego… And here we present the original DJ Premier mix, which is crazy and far superior to the single version..

5. LL Cool J ft. Method Man, Redman, Can-i-bus, DMX, Master P – 4, 3, 2, 1

DOPE beat, crazy, bugged video, beef and drama with LL and Canibus, and every MC on the track was at the top of the rap game at that point in time.  This shit was a SMASH 

6. The D&D All Stars ft. Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, Fat Joe, Smiff-N-Wessun, Jeru The Damaja

To finish off the list, we got a track that has alot in common with the others posted here… DJ Premier beat, Fat Joe, Jeru…  I may be predictable, but I know the formula for a certified classic haha… And all these tracks follow the formula down to the last detail…  I wonder if hip hop like this is ever going to be made again?  It’s sad, but we still have the classics..
