Rock The Bells 2008

May 18, 2008

Since 2004, Guerilla Union’s Rock The Bells hip hop festival series has made history every year, re-uniting some of your favorite groups.  It started with Wu-Tang’s first show with all 9 original members present in some 10 years, and it was ultimately their last such show, with ODB passing later that year.  Since then, the Rock The Bells stage has brought back A Tribe Called Quest and Rage against The Machine 7 years after they broke up.

This year brings the return of the Pharcyde, along with the standard Rock The Bells lineup of hip hop legends, It’s so ill how Guerilla Union assembles such a crazy lineup of artists every year

A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, NAS, MOS DEF, DE LA SOUL, METHOD MAN & REDMAN, RAEKWON & GHOSTFACE, IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE, DEAD PREZ, MURS, SPANK ROCK, WALE, JAY ELECTRONICA, SANTOGOLD, THE COOL KIDS, B.O.B., KIDZ IN THE HALL, AMANDA BLANK

WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: THE PHARCYDE
HOSTED BY: B-REAL, SUPERNATURAL & SCRATCH, DJ GREEN LANTERN

Posse In Effect!

May 13, 2008

Since the very beginning of hip hop, the Posse Cut has been a tried and true staple of the genre.  Theres just somethin about MC’s from different groups and crews coming together to murder a track that makes for classic material.

It’s such a staple, in fact, that it has almost become a cliche and watered down, but what hasn’t in hip hop nowadays? but I digress… Despite how it is today, Over the years there have been some classic records that have made history, started and squashed beefs, sparked trends, bobbed heads and made peaople say “dddaaaammnnn!”… Here are some of the greatest Posse Cuts of all time..

1. Heavy D. ft. Kool G Rap, Grand Puba. CL Smooth, Big Daddy Kane, Pete Rock, Q-Tip – Don’t Curse

Aside from being a dope Posse Cut, its got a cool concept, and props must be given to Heavy D for getting Kool G Rap to spit a verse without cussin’… And this is the guy who spit some of the nastiest rhymes ever in “Talk Like Sex”

2. A Tribe Called Quest ft. Leaders of the New School (aka Busta Rhymes and some no-names)- Scenario

Tribe.  Busta.  Powerful Impact BOOM!! From the Cannon!

3.  Chubb Rock, OC< and Jeru The Damaja – Return Of The Crooklyn Dodgers ’95

Minimum number of MC’s on a Posse Cut is 3 in my opinion…and these three are some of the best to hail from the Boro of Brooklyn.  Backed by a beat from THE best to ever do it, DJ Premier

4. Fat Joe ft. Nas, Jadakiss, Big Pun, Raekwon – John Blaze

So far on the list we moved from late 80’s legends to early to mid 90s classics, here we move into the mid-late 90s era.  Each of these MC’s were in their prime on this one, spittin that hot fuego… And here we present the original DJ Premier mix, which is crazy and far superior to the single version..

5. LL Cool J ft. Method Man, Redman, Can-i-bus, DMX, Master P – 4, 3, 2, 1

DOPE beat, crazy, bugged video, beef and drama with LL and Canibus, and every MC on the track was at the top of the rap game at that point in time.  This shit was a SMASH

6. The D&D All Stars ft. Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, Fat Joe, Smiff-N-Wessun, Jeru The Damaja

To finish off the list, we got a track that has alot in common with the others posted here… DJ Premier beat, Fat Joe, Jeru…  I may be predictable, but I know the formula for a certified classic haha… And all these tracks follow the formula down to the last detail…  I wonder if hip hop like this is ever going to be made again?  It’s sad, but we still have the classics..

My Future Wifey…

Ladies and Gentlemen, let me introduce you to Byata…

byata1

Byata is a sexy, Russian-born, Brooklyn-bred female MC who currently can be seen doin her thing on the VH1 series “Miss Rap Supreme“, which we first covered here on Turd Press back in March.

And unlike most female MC’s in the game today, she can actually rhyme!  I first heard this Coney Island Cutie spit some darts on the Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture record a few years back and was instantly impressed.  Already being down with the Wu-fam, and already having dropped an album (Which you can buy here, first 100 people to cop the Cd and drop their digits will get a phone call from Byata herself according to her myspace page), she is now looking to use Miss Rap Supreme to gain national attention, and I have a feeling she’s going to.

All that talent, style and fine looks and BK swag seriously makes me weak at the knees, yo!

If you havent peeped Miss Rap Supreme yet, get caught up at vh1.com and tune in Monday nights at 10 PM.

If you wanna hear some of her stuff, here’s two tracks from the Wu-Tang Meets the Indie Culture album:

Slow Blues ft. Byata, Prodigal Sunn, Timbo King & Vast Aire

Street Corners ft. Byata, Solomon Childs & Bronze Nazareth

Trust me folks, she is just waitin to blow up!  Don’t sleep!
